The DIY market in France remains dynamic, driven by the desire for autonomy in handling everyday tasks. Since 2023, a requirement for the availability of spare parts for at least five years applies to certain powered DIY and gardening tools, which significantly alters the criteria for selection at the time of purchase. Behind the question “which equipment to buy?” lie less obvious trade-offs than a simple product list.

Repairability of powered tools: a criterion that has become concrete

Most buying guides compare power, battery life, and included accessories. The cost of spare parts and their availability are often absent from the discussion, even though these factors impact the actual lifespan of a drill, jigsaw, or sander.

In France, regulations have mandated since 2023 that spare parts must be available for at least five years for certain powered DIY and gardening equipment. For an individual, this means that before purchasing an electric tool, they can check if the manufacturer offers an accessible parts catalog and at what price. A replaceable drill motor for a fraction of the cost of a new device changes the calculation.

Each piece of equipment featured on Oh Brico can be evaluated from this perspective, by cross-referencing the technical sheet with the manufacturer’s spare parts policy.

The repairability index, displayed on some devices, does not yet cover all DIY tools. Its absence does not mean that the tool is irreparable, but it deprives the buyer of a standardized reference. The prudent approach is to favor brands that publicly document the availability of their components.

Protection and safety: choose based on the task, not the aisle

Protective equipment is often relegated to the end of the list, presented as mere accessories. This approach misses the point. The type of protection directly depends on the work being done, and a dust mask is not the same as safety glasses or noise-canceling headphones.

Dust and wood cutting

Sanding and cutting wood generate fine particles. An appropriate filtering mask reduces inhalation, but source extraction (connecting a vacuum to the sander, for example) also limits dispersion in the room. The INRS documents these exposure risks to dust in a professional context, and the principles remain relevant for a home DIYer spending several hours sanding a piece of furniture.

Noise and vibrations

A jigsaw or hammer drill produces a noise level that, during prolonged sessions, fatigues the ear. Hearing protection suitable for the type of tool used is part of the basic equipment, just like a screwdriver or tape measure.

A common mistake is to buy a generic safety kit from a supermarket. It’s better to select each protection based on the planned work:

  • Sanding or cutting: appropriate class filtering mask and anti-splash glasses
  • Drilling in masonry: closed glasses and hearing protection if the tool is a hammer drill
  • Working at height: closed shoes with non-slip soles, even for a simple light fixture change

Measuring and marking tools: precision before power

Before drilling, cutting, or screwing, the quality of the result almost always depends on measurement. A hole drilled in the wrong place is not easily corrected, and a piece of furniture assembled without checking for squareness ends up wobbly.

A reliable tape measure and a spirit level cover the majority of a home DIYer’s needs. The tape measure is used for every project, from a simple frame to hanging shelves. The spirit level ensures horizontal and vertical alignment, two parameters that the human eye misjudges beyond a few centimeters.

For more ambitious projects (tile laying, building custom furniture), a carpenter’s square and a marking pencil complete the setup. These tools cost almost nothing and prevent long and frustrating reworks.

Drill-driver and saw: two electric tools to weigh

If the budget necessitates a choice between several powered tools, the drill-driver remains the first logical purchase. It covers drilling in wood, thin metal, and, depending on the model, light masonry. It also replaces the manual screwdriver for long assemblies.

The choice between corded and cordless depends on the work location, not an abstract preference. An apartment without a garage or outdoor outlet makes the battery version more practical. A fixed workshop with accessible outlets reduces the need to pay the extra cost for a battery and charger.

The jigsaw comes second for those who regularly work with wood. It allows for straight and curved cuts in panels, plywood, or laminate. For occasional cuts, a hand saw remains sufficient and requires neither energy nor special maintenance.

Batteries and upcoming European regulations

The European regulation on batteries stipulates that starting in 2027, the batteries of portable devices must be replaceable without specialized tools. This change potentially affects cordless DIY tools. For a purchase today, checking that the battery is removable and available separately remains a useful reflex, even if the legal requirement is not yet in effect for all product categories.

  • Check the battery compatibility with other tools of the same brand (single platform systems)
  • Compare the price of a replacement battery with the price of the complete tool
  • Consult the manufacturer’s policy on the duration of battery availability

Home DIY improves in quality when the choice of tools incorporates their actual lifespan and user protection, not just the power displayed on the packaging. Well-selected equipment from the start limits repurchases, accidents, and disappointing results on each project.
